Recently I have been talking to friends and family members about my use of Twitter. I was surprised to learn that even after all of the media buzz surrounding the service in the past few months that many people still do not understand what it is about, know how to get started or why they would want to use it. The result of these conversations is this section on my web site containing some basic Twitter instructions. I hope it helps.
Getting started with Twitter is actually pretty easy.
Set up your account. Go to Twitter.com and click on the green Get Started—Join! button. You will be directed to their Join the Conversation page. Fill in the appropriate fields by entering your full name, username, password, and email address. Click on the I accept. Create my account button.
After your account is created, you will be given the chance to see if some of your friends are on Twitter by checking your online email service address book. This is helpful if you use Gmail, Yahoo or AOL. Twitter will find the contacts with accounts and give you the option of following them. If you do not want to do this or don’t use one of these email services don’t worry, you also have the option to skip this step.
Once you have completed this step and clicked Continue you will be asked if you want to invite your other contacts to use Twitter. This is strictly a personal choice but I did NOT invite my friends to Twitter. I don’t like it when people send me these type of invites, so in turn, I don’t send them.
The final process of setting up your account is a recommendations page. Twitter will provide you a list of random celebrities, bloggers, and other Twitter users to follow. After you make your decision to follow some, all or none of these recommended users simply click the Finish button and there you have it. You have set-up your Twitter account.
Once you have set-up your account feel free to follow me on Twitter and I will return the favor. For more Twitter tips and useful information check out my Twitter Basics page.
