Guest submission by my daughter, Patience Ward. Several weeks ago she sent me an essay titled “Breaking Barriers” and I posted it. The response was so good I asked her if she would be interested in submitting articles on a regular basis. She took me up on my offer. The following is her latest submission.
I was talking about music with my friend last night. So I just thought I’d share some music history with you.
Since the beginning of time, music has been there. It was there to entertain, as well as the fact that it just sounds good. But there were other reasons too. People don’t usually see it this way, but music is a way of communicating. It often tells a story or teaches a lesson. Music is also used to bring out certain emotions in people. If you’re in a good mood, you might listen to upbeat, fast songs that are usually good for dancing to. If you’re sad, you would probably listen to slower, sadder songs, often about sad things. Sadly, a lot of people forget the emotional side to music, and just focus on the first two reasons.
There’s even another thing that people rarely notice about music. My stepmom, my dad, and I were talking about this one night last summer, and came to a surprising conclusion.
In a way, music is a time machine.
Many people have longed for a way to go back to the past. Music is the way. A song might be special to you, or remind you of the past. It can make you remember those things to the point that it creates a picture of that in your mind. For this reasons, there’s been happy songs that made me cry, and sad songs that made me smile. So some of you might reject this, but it’s always been there.
There’s your time machine!

Indeed. After the olfactory sense, which goes right to our brains sans filters, Music touches us in so many ways.
