Today I didn’t really have the best day. I’ve been hurt, yelled at, annoyed, and insulted. Some people obviously didn’t realize that, and made it worse. By the time school was dismissed, I just wanted to go home before I hurt anyone. I couldn’t though, because my brothers had to stay after school. (It wasn’t detention or anything though….) So I just sat outside and listened to my iPod while waiting.
While I was sitting there, my iPod played the song, ‘This Is Your Life.’ If you haven’t heard it, that song basically says that this is your life and asks if you’re satisfied with who you are. It also says that you don’t have forever to live. You can turn your life around though. Nothing ever has to stay the same, and it rarely does.
As I heard that song, the lyrics just kind of jumped out at me. This is my life. I don’t want to be this way. A lot of bad things can happen, but it shouldn’t ruin my day. I may be hit with a hockey stick, mocked, and just irritated. (And I experienced all of that today) I can turn my day around though. It doesn’t have to be this way. If this was my last day that I lived, I wouldn’t want it to be like that. I wouldn’t want to be bitter and depressed when I finally leave here.
That song really helped me check on what’s really important. Even when some lady across the street yelled at me, I couldn’t return to being so mad. What she said isn’t so nice, but I won’t get caught up on that. Life goes on, and if it didn’t, I wouldn’t let it end like that.
So remember, this is your life…Are you who you want to be?
Guest submission by my daughter, Patience Ward. A couple months ago she sent me an essay titled “Breaking Barriers” and I posted it. The response was so good I asked her if she would be interested in submitting articles on a regular basis. She took me up on my offer. This is her latest submission. – TW
